Halmie Azrie is currently a senior analyst at the Vriens & Partners office in Malaysia. He became familiar with public policy advocacy and stakeholder engagement during his previous position as a research executive under the Democracy and Governance unit at the independent think-tank IDEAS (Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs) for nearly three years. Prior to that, he did his internship at another research-based outfit IMAN Research.
He was a passionate student activist with the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students (PKPIM) and the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) between 2006 until 2020, being appointed to several leadership capacities within the grassroot NGO at district, campus, state, and central level. Often invited to speak at universities, intellectual forums, and book clubs, he represented Malaysia at international youth conferences in Istanbul, Bangkok, Berlin, and Seoul.
He’s also been interviewed by Channel News Asia, The Straits Times, BERNAMA, Radio Televisyen Malaysian, Berita Harian, MalaysiaKini and BFM 89.9 to deliver political insights and contemporary analysis. Furthermore, he has published op-eds about regional democratic trends, institutional reforms, human rights, progressive societies, ideological movements as well as cosmopolitan identities on numerous online portals like The Edge, Sinar Harian, and The Star.
Halmie holds a bachelor’s degree (Hons) in International Relations from Staffordshire University, United Kingdom. Whenever possible, he enjoys his music playlist and spends valuable time with his daughter.
