Marzuki Darusman is a former Attorney General of Indonesia, having served under President Abdurrahman Wahid from 1999 to 2001. Darusman led various high-profile human rights and corruption cases during his tenure. Prior to his appointment as Attorney General, he spent twenty years as a member of the People’s Representative Council under the Golkar Party. Darusman served as the Cabinet Secretary under President Abdurrahman Wahid before returning to the Parliament in 2004, where he represented the Golkar Party for five years.
Darusman was also a Commissioner at PT Freeport Indonesia from 2010 to 2019.
Darusman is renowned for his contributions to domestic and international human rights. He chaired the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission for a decade and is the founding Director of the Human Rights Resources Centre for ASEAN. He has served as Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in North Korea and a member of the Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in North Korea. A member of the International Independent Group of Eminent Persons for Sri Lanka, Darusman was assigned in 2010 to serve as Chair of the UN Secretary General’s Panel of Experts on Sri Lanka. In 2009, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon appointed Darusman to a UN Commission of Inquiry to investigate the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Most recently, Darusman chaired the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar.
Darusman is a co-founder of the Foundation for International Human Rights Reporting Standards (FIHRRST), a Belgium-based international human rights research body, and a co-founder of the Partnership for Governance Reform in Indonesia (PGRI), a multi-stakeholder organization working with government institutions, international organizations and civil society to promote and implement reforms at local, regional and national levels. Darusman is also a member of the Switzerland and UK-based Global Leadership Foundation (GLF), a non-profit organization to promote effective political leadership, good governance and sustainable development. GLF was set up by former South African President Frederik Willem de Klerk with members comprising of former presidents, prime ministers and other senior leaders who provide private and independent advice to help leaders tackle contemporary challenges.
