Shazwan Mustafa Kamal is a Director at Vriens & Partners’ Malaysia practice, where he works closely with clients and internal teams to design and deliver public policy advocacy, government relations, and political risk advisory engagements. He has a particular focus on intelligence gathering, risk mitigation, and structured project execution. Shazwan leads several healthcare and ICT client portfolios.
Shazwan also heads Vriens & Partners’ regional healthcare practice. In this capacity, he has led projects involving multi-level political engagements within the parliamentary space, coalition-building with patient groups, and the co-development of policy papers for innovative financing mechanisms. His work also spans procurement-related policy issues, including specifications and access frameworks for pharmaceutical products.
In the technology and digital economy space, Shazwan has advised clients on issues ranging from data center investment requirements and federal- and state-level approvals to emerging fintech trends in the payments space. His cross-sector experience enables him to bridge policy analysis with on-the-ground stakeholder intelligence across multiple levels of government.
Shazwan brings over a decade of experience across politics, journalism, and media. Prior to joining Vriens & Partners, he worked at the Malay Mail from 2014 to 2020 as an Assistant News Editor and Senior Journalist, where he oversaw day-to-day newsroom operations, led political analysis, and directed coverage of major national events including the 2018 General Election. Earlier in his career, he was a journalist at The Malaysian Insider, covering breaking political and economic developments.
Shazwan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Monash University and a Master’s degree in Diversity and the Media from the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom. He is also a Chevening Scholar.
